Cycle skills for adults: 4 November

Do you want to get pedalling with more confidence? Go Cycle Christchurch is offering a free cycle skills session for adults at Rutland Reserve on Thursday 4 November. See the Go Cycle Christchurch Facebook event for more details:

Shake that nervousness and join us for this free session to learn & practice better cycle skills to enjoy a safer ride around beautiful Christchurch!
We will have fun practicing corners, looking behind, left/right signalling, safe stopping and avoiding hazards in a car free environment for about an hour.
Then we practice on quieter neighbourhood roads….. if you are ready 😉

All you need to bring is your bike, helmet and determination to learn new skills. No special clothing needed, just wear comfortable clothes to suit the weather.
You will be responsible for your own safety, so please make sure your bike is in good working order (we will not be able to do repairs).
Meeting place: Rutland Reserve, St Albans (by Paparoa St. School boundary)
If the weather is wet on the day this session will be postponed to our next event – those registered will be contacted directly if there are any changes.

Update: CNC final seal and low noise asphalt

Work is about to start to apply the final seal and low-noise asphalt on the Christchurch Northern Corridor (CNC) and QEII Drive. Weather permitting, night work to apply chip seal will start this Sunday 31 October, and low noise asphalting around the end of November. The CNC section through Redwood has first priority.

It is expected to take until March 2022 to complete all surfacing work on the CNC from Cranford St to the Waimakariri Bridge and on QEII Drive from Main North Rd to Innes Rd.

Wheels to Wings information days: 27-29 October

The Council is holding three information days this week for the Wheels to Wings Papanui ki WaiwhetÅ« cycleway to share what was heard during the consultation, Council’s responses, changes based on the feedback and further information on the proposed cycleway, including other options considered. Due to the current COVID Alert Level, bookings are required to ensure public health requirements are complied with. Children’s Halloween Scavenger Hunt: 29 October

For parents with younger children there’ll be a Level 2 version Halloween Scavenger Hunt on Friday 29 October from 4:30pm-5:30pm in St James Park in Papanui. This contactless event has a scavenger hunt sheet that can be downloaded from https://bit.ly/3pcxoae, or else see the post below for other options. Ray White Papanui and Rotary Papanui are delighted to put on this free Papanui community activity for children 12 years and under (accompanied by an adult). Come in your costume and join in the Halloween fun at St James Park!

We have made changes to our normal format to comply with current Covid 2 levels so this year there will be a contactless Halloween character scavenger hunt for the children to participate in.

The characters will be available for the children to find from 4.30pm – 5.30pm on Friday 29 October 2021 at St James Park, Papanui.

Due to this being under alert level 2 rules, and contactless you will need to download (and print if your preference) the scavenger hunt sheet and bring it with you. You can find the scavenger hunt sheet by either:

Wheels to Wings cycleway: hearings panel briefing agenda

On Thursday 21 October at 2pm Council staff will brief the hearings panel for the Wheels to Wings cycleway. The briefing agenda (link below) includes the background to the project, a summary of the consultation feedback, and design concepts considered. The briefing will be livestreamed and will be followed by public information days and a further period of engagement with the community to gather feedback on the design concepts and the design changes made following the previous consultation.

8 October Board meeting outcomes

At the 8 October meeting, the Waipapa/Papanui-Innes Community Board:

    • received a public forum item from a member of the public, discussing the final safety audit for the Cranford St upgrade, and requested an urgent briefing from staff on the issues raised;
    • approved a parking upgrade for Winston Ave;
    • approved proposed road names for a development off Prestons Rd;
    • approved $2,801 in Summer with your Neighbours funding;
    • cancelled the scheduled 22 October meeting of the Board;
    • approved renewals for three streets in Richmond;
    • received an area report on issues and initiatives within the Board area;
    • and approved two grants from the Board’s Discretionary Response Fund.
