Further to yesterday’s story about a likely average City Council rates rise of around 5% (down slightly on forecast), last week Environment Canterbury approved a budget that will see their rates rise an average of 10.51%, which is double what was forecast in the regional council’s Long-Term Plan. In percentage terms that’s a big jump – in dollar terms it could mean an extra $33.37 a year for the average Christchurch household. On Tuesday 25 June the Council will meet to finalise what’s being described as a ‘no surprises’ budget, also known as the Annual Plan for 2019/20. A forecast 5.5% average rates increase will be pulled back to just under 5% if the Plan is adopted as proposed. The agenda for the Council meeting can be found at https://christchurch.infocouncil.biz/…/CAPL_20190625_AGN_33…, and more information can be found at the link below: https://www.ccc.govt.nz/news-and-events/newsline/show/3696
“A budget that focuses on delivering core services while keeping rate rises to lower than signalled in the Long Term Plan will be considered by Christchurch City Council next week.”

Last Friday night there was a serious house fire in Papanui, near the corner of Main North Rd and Cranford St. Thank you to the community member who shared a video of the event with Think Papanui. I subsequently also posted a link to a Givealittle page to support the people affected. At the time of writing this recap the $1,000 fundraising target had just been exceeded.
Over the weekend Think Papanui launched a ‘Papanui in pictures’ photo promotion. Members of the public have the opportunity to share a photo from the Papanui area, and one lucky contributor will be chosen at random to receive a Mitre 10 gift voucher. Click through for details, and note that this is open to all ages and no Facebook or other social media account is needed. Thank you to Mitre 10 Mega Papanui for donating the gift voucher and covering some promotional costs. By Thursday the first submissions were arriving.

The Council is consulting on a draft Integrated Water Strategy – there’s a lot of detail in this, so I’m going to see if I can pick up a printed copy of the consultation document at one of our local libraries, and I’ll plan to attend a drop-in session.
There are a couple of candidate information sessions coming up for people interested in standing as a Council or Community Board candidate in the upcoming local body elections. The first is this coming Tuesday 25 June.
