Earlier this year the Council announced that construction of the Main North Road bus priority project was planned from July. There has been no sign of action yet, and Think Papanui has been advised by Council that NZ Transport Agency funding for the project is not confirmed. An update is expected to be sent to businesses and affected property owners this week.
Edit: 20 August update – the Council has confirmed that work on the Main North Road bus priority project will not commence until 2020 at the earliest. There is no confirmation if or when funding from NZTA will be made available for the project and no confirmed construction timeline.
There were long queues waiting in the rain for the reopening of the St Vincent De Paul store in Papanui on Saturday. Mayor Lianne Dalziel and Councillor for Papanui Ward Mike Davidson were on hand for the opening, in a new building constructed on the old Vinnies site at 19 Langdons Road.
The store had been located at Bishopdale Mall during construction. Shop manager Polly Fisher said that support had been wonderful, and that regulars as well as new customers had supported the store while at its temporary site.
The primary objective of the store is to provide clothing and other items at very reasonable prices, and income from sales goes into supporting needs in the community. All stock is donated, and there is always a need for more – goods can be left at the Society’s clothing bins, dropped off at the Papanui store, or free pickup can be arranged.
Store hours are 9am-4pm weekdays, and 10am-3pm on Saturdays.
Reminder: consultation on the Council’s proposed transport projects in the Cranford Street area closes on Monday 19 August. A range of projects are being proposed to assist in managing traffic flows resulting from the opening of the Christchurch Northern Corridor in mid 2020, including main road and intersection upgrades, traffic calming and turning restrictions, work on cycle routes, and more. A significant portion of the road network in the area is proposed to be restricted to 40km/h. The lane drop on Main North Road, the associated sinkhole repair, and also the left-out closure on Prestons Road were all resolved late last Friday evening.
On Tuesday this week there was another community weeding day at Papanui Bush. This generally occurs monthly on the second Tuesday of the month.
Also on Tuesday we had a Redwood Business and Residents’ meeting. Keep an eye out for events being planned by the group.
A Council staff report, with an attached independent safety assessment, was published following the recent consultation on proposed improvements to the Harewood/Gardiners/Breens intersection. The Waimāero/Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board will hear deputations and consider the report this Saturday 17 August.
Nominations are open for the Christchurch Civic Awards for 2019, recognising members of the community who have made a significant contribution to the life of the city and its people.
Consultation on the proposed new PAK’nSAVE supermarket and fuel station for Papanui also closes today, 16 August.
