Lime scooter update: on 13 February, a Christchurch City Council committee will consider staff recommendations that: (1) the Council approve a 12-month permit and increase the number of Lime scooters allowed from 700 to 1,000; (2) a rental fee be charged that relates to the public space occupied by scooters, and (3) the maximum number of e-scooters in Christchurch from all vendors be capped at 1,600 (presumably excluding privately-owned e-scooters). Two Community Boards have received the draft Christchurch Northern Corridor Downstream Effects Mitigation Plan, and as a next step it is on the agenda of the full Council meeting on Thursday 14 February. Both boards have recommended that Council receive the plan for staff to commence engagement with the community on the plan’s recommendations. There is a call on the St Albans News page for members of the public to attend Thursday’s Council meeting to present a petition in opposition to the proposed changes. Work is underway to complete a missing section of the Papanui Parallel cycleway. Currently there’s no access from Grassmere St to Grants Rd or the Ngaio Marsh Retirement Village.
Seven of Christchurch’s 16 current City Councillors are aligned with People’s Choice / Labour. This week’s Star reports that ahead of the October 2019 local body elections, People’s Choice has been surveying residents on potential election issues, and is seeking expressions of interest from potential candidates. Canterbury University’s Associate Professor Bronwyn Hayward offers an alternative perspective on politics at a local level – “Often voters don’t care, if you’re doing a good job, listening … they’re less likely to care about your political standing”. The Christchurch City Council is about to consider the Draft Annual Plan for 2019/20. This document outlines Council plans and funding for the year ahead.
