End of an era: demolition of the former Mad Butcher building (previously a Valentines restaurant) is underway at the corner of Main North Road, Northcote Road & QEII Drive. The corner site is set to become car parking for the adjacent PAK’nSAVE supermarket, currently under construction.
Graham Condon fitness centre reopens
The Graham Condon Fitness Centre reopens today Monday 3 October after being upgraded and reconfigured so that it can offer a new type of high intensity group training class. “Up to 24 people will be able to participate in the 30-minute group training classes that are taking the fitness world by storm”, says the Council.

Post voting documents by 4 October
As of Friday evening around 24 per cent of of eligible Papanui Ward voters have returned their voting papers. There’s one more week to go – people planning to mail back their voting papers for the local elections need to get them in the post by this Tuesday 4 October. If you miss the cut-off for posting your voting papers, you will need to hand deliver them to one of the ballot boxes that have been placed at open Council libraries and service centres and in the ground floor of the Civic Offices in Hereford Street. Community Market in Redwood: weekly from this Saturday
The Christchurch Northern Community Market will run this Saturday 1 October from 9am to 2pm at the Redwood Hotel, and then will be on every Saturday through the summer. Busy Addington intersection closing temporarily
If you’re heading towards the south side of the city this weekend take care and watch for changed traffic conditions around the Lincoln Road, Barrington Street and Whiteleigh Avenue intersection.
Heads up! The very busy Lincoln Road, Barrington Street and Whiteleigh Avenue intersection will close to all traffic for three days from Friday night so contractors can work around-the-clock!

Watch for traffic outside Papanui High School
Papanui High School finishes at 2:30pm each school day. Take care if you’re in the area at that time as traffic can build up quickly, especially on Sisson Drive as students head towards the bus stops on Main North Road.

Work underway on missing sections of the Northern Line MCR
Enabling works are underway in preparation for construction of the sections of the Northern Line major cycleway between Tuckers Road & Sturrocks Road and also north of Barnes Road to Main North Road. Stormwater culvert pipes are being extended at the Tuckers Rd level crossing, and work will then move to Barnes Road. Cycleway path corridor works are expected to commence in December 2022 and take approximately four months. Please note that Tuckers Road is currently fully closed at the level crossing, with detours in place.
