The Christchurch City Council received 144 submissions on the proposed changes to speed limits in the Harewood and Yaldhurst areas. No changes to the propsal have been made as a result of the consultation, and the next step will happen at the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board’s 14 May meeting. The recommended decision is that the Board recommends that Council implements the proposed changes, which include a reduction to 60km/h for the top end of Harewood & Sawyers Arms Roads, as well as Styx Mill Road and part of Gardiners Road. This article in The Press gives an insight into what may be developed in the former Foodstuffs grocery warehouse behind the Northcote / Main North Road intersection – an ‘entertainment and sports terminus’, catering for netball, basketball, volleyball, and futsal. Earlier this week the Nor’West News reported that the complex could also house options such as 10-pin bowling, Laser Strike, and Clip ‘n Climb. It looks like the developers are asking the Council to commit to leasing the facility (at a ‘drop in the bucket’ cost of $1.5 million a year) before the development goes ahead.

“Downtime dice” is a wellbeing initiative from the All Right? campaign. The dice are available free and can be picked up from some Christchurch libraries and other locations. When Think Papanui visited the Papanui library today they were cleaned out (picture) but more are expected soon. Read more on the Council’s website:

An update on the proposal to discontinue the 107 and 108 bus routes through Papanui: at Think Papanui’s appearance at the ECan Long Term Plan hearing this morning, Chair Steve Lowndes was heard to say that discontinuation of bus services is “not a fait accompli”. That’s a positive and hopeful thing to hear, although it doesn’t completely align with the draft plan, in which closure of the bus routes is included in every option presented. More to come.

At the 27 April meeting of the Papanui-Innes Community Board, the Board: approved proposed road marking changes at level crossings; approved a grant from the Board’s Positive Youth Development Fund; and approved a grant to support Crimewatch Chch patrols in the northwest area.
