Over this past week there has been a Sustainable Living Series at Papanui Library, kicking off with the ‘Great Stash Swap‘ on Saturday. I hear this may become an annual event on the Library’s calendar.
The Nor’West News has an update this week on the Paddington Reserve playground renewal. A staff report is expected to go to the Waipapa/Papanui-Innes Community Board in May or June.
In the wild weather on Monday night, part of Rutland Street was closed for a time due to a falling power pole.
Top post of the week, month, and year so far was the news broken by Think Papanui that Kmart is to relocate its Shirley store to Langdons Road in Papanui in early 2020. At the time of writing I’ve received more than 6,000 comments on Facebook about this. I’ve written further about Kmart’s announcement over at simonbritten.com.
During this week, the Council has been hearing submissions on the Draft Annual Plan. I didn’t cover this on Think Papanui, but you can catch the video of Ali Jones submitting on behalf of the Waipapa/Papanui-Innes Community Board in the Council’s video library.
I’ve shared a video published by the alliance building the Christchurch Northern Corridor (CNC), with information on the central median barriers to be constructed along QEII Drive and Cranford Street.

Virgil Place in Papanui will be closed for around four weeks from next Monday 6 May to enable wastewater renewal works to be completed.

Coming up:
On Wednesday 8 May 2019 there will be a joint meeting of the Waipapa/Papanui-Innes and the Waikura/Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Boards. The purpose of the meeting is for the two Boards to receive the comments submitted on the Christchurch Northern Corridor (CNC) Downstream Effects Mitigation Plan and allow submitters who wish to be heard an opportunity to speak.
It’s not out yet, but I understand that there’s Council consultation coming up soon on the Breens/Harewood/Gardiners intersection, just up the road from Papanui Ward. I’ll post about this on Think Papanui when the consultation opens.

Virgil Place road closure from Monday 6 May
For around 4 weeks from next Monday 6 May, Virgil Place in Papanui will be closed to enable wastewater renewal works to be completed. Hopefully all effected residents have been informed about this, as vehicle access to properties will be restricted at times.

I’m down at the Northlink retail site on Langdons Road, which is where Kmart have announced they’ll be relocating to, from The Palms in Shirley.
I’ve had a lot of response to my Facebook post about this move, with more than 6,000 comments. With that many comments I haven’t been able to keep across the detail, but what I have noticed is that I’ve heard from people who are happy that Kmart is coming here, in fact they’re coming … just in the background – sorry about the lighting. They’re just going to be over there somewhere, which is still a bit of a construction site. Some people of course who are not happy, particularly with the Shirley store closing, and there’s other people who have raised a range of concerns about the move.

I’m just going to spin round one more time to have a look at the building site here on Langdons Road. Across the car park there’s going to be some more construction – in theory, early in 2020 that’s where we’re going to see Kmart, over that way. Kmart Papanui store confirmed
After repeatedly denying plans to open a Papanui store, Kmart has now confirmed that it will be relocating its Shirley store to Langdons Road in Papanui in early 2020. “The decision to relocate the store to Papanui is part of our vision to continue to grow our store network in Christchurch, and we are doing this by ensuring our stores are in the best locations to service our customers now and well into the future … We look forward to welcoming everybody into our new store in early 2020.” The full Kmart press release can be found at http://www.medianet.com.au/releases/release-details.aspx/…

Paddington Reserve feedback to go to Community Board
Consultation update: this week’s Nor’West News reports that public feedback on the proposed playground renewal at Paddington Reserve has been complied and a staff report will go to the Waipapa/Papanui-Innes Community Board in May or June.
