At the 10 August meeting, the Waipapa/Papanui-Innes Community Board: received a briefing on options regarding the enhancement of the Edgeware Village area; approved the continuation of heavy vehicle restrictions for Mary, Proctor, and Grassmere Streets; and approved two grants from the Board’s Discretionary Response Fund. Karl a Social Worker from Canterbury Men’s Centre and Ethan Community Health Worker for Plunket will be visiting and together they have a wealth of knowledge and experience about Men’s Health & Well-being. Karl and Ethan have some handy resources to share and they’ll also provide information about their new Dads Support Group starting August 18th at the Canterbury Men’s Centre.
There is also a bag of treats to give away to one lucky Dad! Babies and toddlers are welcome and there are plenty of toys to keep them entertained and a fun outdoor area – come along, enjoy a hot drink and meet some other dads!

A significant number of submissions were made in response to the proposal for bus priority changes to Main North Road in the Papanui area. A modified proposal is now being presented to the Community Board for approval. One of the contentious aspects was Grassmere Street access, and it looks like a modified version of the ‘option B’ proposal is being recommended, which adds traffic lights but retains full left/right turns into and out of that street. Interesting comments here from Papanui Councillor Mike Davidson. Our Council was discussing a report on the water supply programme that can be found at the link below, and which includes advice that “The Minister of Health has signalled a stricter regime for potable water supply with a significant increase in the standard of infrastructure and risk management required to avoid residual disinfection / chlorination” as well as other interesting details such as timelines for remediation works at a number of pump stations. http://christchurch.infocouncil.biz/Open/2018/08/CNCL_20180809_AGN_2346_AT_SUP_WEB.htm
Today Councillors sent a strong message to Central Government, to leave Christchurch’s drinking water with the people of Christchurch, under a democratically elected governance structure. The possible outcome of what may be coming from Central Government is extremely concerning with the control of our drinking water moving to an undemocratic governance structure with not only the possibility of permanent chlorinated drinking water, but also the rate payers of Christchurch having to help pay for the drinking water infrastructure in other regions in the South Island. This is totally unacceptable and I will march in the streets with the people of Christchurch if it heads that way.
