Trees along Papanui Domain’s boundary with Papanui High School are set to be removed to improve sportsfield conditions, and as a precursor to new plantings that will increase canopy cover from 40% to 55%.

You may notice trees being removed from Papanui Domain from this coming week, along the boundary with Papanui High School. This is part of a plan approved by our Community Board to increase canopy cover in the domain from 40% to 55%. Due to the species (macrocarpa) and proximity to the sport field, these particular trees have made the ground dry, hard and unsuitable for the surface. Removal is supported by Papanui High School, Papanui Softball, Canterbury Rugby League, and Papanui Rugby League Club. In line with the Council’s tree policy, at least two replacement trees will be planted for every tree removed. A dying sequoia tree near Sawyers Arms Road is also due to come out. The replanting is planned for August 2027. The first image identifes the trees set to be removed, and the second the subsequent planting.
