Wairakei/Aorangi construction update: 8 Feb 2025

In these pictures work can be seen progressing at the intersection of Wairakei & Aorangi Roads.

The week Wairakei Road reopened in the citybound direction only. Aorangi Road is mostly closed at the intersection, although there’s a left out onto Wairakei Road on the north side of the intersection. Businesses in the area remain open – see the signage in the area for parking options.

Work underway includes: wastewater, stormwater, and water supply replacements and upgrades; construction of the final section of the Nor’West Arc Cycleway; and a street renewal of Aorangi Road.

Take care and watch out for changed traffic conditions if you’re in the area.

Railway crossing upgrade at Sawyers Arms Road

Work to improve safety and access at the rail crossing on Sawyers Arms Road commences on Monday 10 February, and will continue through to mid April 2025.

Upgrades include: a signalised pedestrian crossing, improved pedestrian railway crossing points; and additional flashing lights and bells. Other works will include new ducting and drainage, new kerb and channels, new footpaths and streetscaping. Through most of this work there will be a lane closure and temporary traffic lights to control traffic. For two weeks in early March there will be a full closure of Sawyers Arms Road, with detours in place.

When the Sawyers Arms construction is complete, all three upgraded crossings (Harewood Road, Langdons Road, Sawyers Arms Road) need to be commissioned together due to the integrated signalling design. KiwiRail have indicated they have resource in May to perform the commissioning works and turn on the lights and automatic railway gates at all three crossings.

Take care if you are in the area and watch for changed traffic conditions.
