This Sunday 18 September there’s an opportunity to meet Papanui, Innes, and Central Ward Council and Community Board Candidates at 1pm at the St Albans Community Centre, 1049 Colombo St. The event will also be live streamed on Think Papanui. See the Facebook event for more details.
Papanui Library to close from Monday 19 September
Papanui Library, one of the busiest in Christchurch’s library network, will be closed for refurbishment for six weeks from Monday 19 September. Work planned includes new flooring, roofing, and bathrooms, painting, and a renewed air conditioning system. During the closure items cannot be returned to the library, and hold items will be available at Fendalton Library, unless another site is requested. The customer service / NZ Post area will remain open.

Water sub-main renewals for St James Ave & Dalriada St
Contractors will start work on the renewal of water sub-main pipes in St James Avenue and Dalriada Street from 15 September. This work could impact traffic flow through the area and access to properties at times, and is expected to continue through to late October 2022. For more information see the works notice:

2 September Community Board meeting outcomes
On Friday 2 September, the Waipapa/Papanui-Innes Community Board:
-
- granted a ground lease to Shirley Community Trust in relation to the MacFarlane Park Neighbourhood Centre (former Plunket building);
- approved No Stopping restrictions in the Langdons Road area;
- approved public transport improvements along route 17;
- approved over $3,000 in ‘Summer with your neighbours’ grants;
- agreed to transitional arrangements for the Board’s Youth Development Fund;
- approved two grants from the Board’s Discretionary Response Fund;
- and approved a signalised pedestrian crossing on Northcote Road to support the new Marian College site.
The Board will not meet again this term. Following the local body elections, a date will be set for an inaugural meeting of the Waipapa/Papanui-Innes Central Community Board.

Papanui War Memorial Avenues to be Recognised in District Plan
The trees and plaques in 16 Papanui memorial avenues are proposed to be added as significant heritage items to the District Plan.
“The Papanui War Memorial Avenues, 16 streets with trees and plaques, are of high historical and social significance for their association with World War II, and its impact on Christchurch communities”, says the Council’s statement of significance.
The affected streets are Alpha Avenue, Claremont Avenue, Condell Avenue, Dormer Street, Gambia Street, Halton Street, Hartley Avenue, Kenwyn Avenue, Lansbury Avenue, Norfolk Street, Perry Street, Scotston Avenue, St James Avenue, Tillman Avenue, Tomes Road, and Windermere Road.

Meet Papanui Council candidates
Papanui Council candidates Mike Davidson and Victoria Henstock spoke at a ‘meet the candidates’ event in St Albans last night. There’ll be another opportunity to meet Papanui candidates on Sunday 18 September at 1pm at the St Albans Community Centre, 1049 Colombo St.

24-hour swim supports St John
This weekend from noon Saturday 3 September to noon Sunday there’ll be a 24-hour swim challenge at the Graham Condon Recreation and Sport Centre in Papanui. Christchurch City Council lifeguard supervisor Martin Martinez D’Orso has organised this event as a fundraiser to support St John Christchurch. The public can participate by swimming laps or by donating via a givalittle page.
