Breaking: Papanui ward has a new Councillor. Victoria Henstock has been elected with 4735 votes. Ms Henstock was a lawyer for more than 20 years before moving into executive leadership roles. Time running out to vote in local elections
Last chance to have your say: around 40% of eligible voters have now returned their voting papers, and you have until noon today Saturday 8 October to do the same. Don’t post them though – drop-off voting papers at any open Council service centre or library.
St Silas Plant and Book Sale: 15 October
There’ll be a Plant and Book Sale at St Silas Church Hall in Redwood on Saturday 15 October from 8am to 1pm. BYO bag or box to take away some of the 1000 plants on offer, and maybe some books for summer reading.
Northern Community Market – every Saturday from 9am

Cranford Basin Planting Event: Sunday 9 October
Trees For Canterbury is working with the Styx Living Laboratory Trust to plant 1,000 pukio (a sedge used for wetland planting and revegetation) at Cranford Basin this Sunday 9 October from 10am to noon. See this Facebook event for more details.

Trees for Canterbury are working in conjunction with Styx Living Laboratory to plant 1000 pukio (Carex secta) to add to the 40,000 kahikatea trees that have been planted in the wetland area.
Join us for this community planting and for a BBQ afterwards.
Please bring your own gardening gloves, a water bottle, and wear sturdy footwear or gumboots recommended.
St Paul’s open day: Saturday 15 October
The Christchurch Heritage Festival starts this week, and on Saturday 15 October there’ll be an open day at St Paul’s Anglican Church from 10am to 3pm, with bell tour tours available from 1pm-2pm. Click through for more information:

Drop off your voting papers by noon this Saturday 8 October
The deadline for returning voting papers by mail has passed, but people can drop off their voting papers at any open Council service centre or library between now and noon on Saturday 8 October, including Redwood Library (pic) and the Papanui Service Centre. If you did not receive voting papers in the mail but are eligible to vote, you can request a special vote.

‘Mad Butcher’ demolition underway
End of an era: demolition of the former Mad Butcher building (previously a Valentines restaurant) is underway at the corner of Main North Road, Northcote Road & QEII Drive. The corner site is set to become car parking for the adjacent PAK’nSAVE supermarket, currently under construction.
Graham Condon fitness centre reopens
The Graham Condon Fitness Centre reopens today Monday 3 October after being upgraded and reconfigured so that it can offer a new type of high intensity group training class. “Up to 24 people will be able to participate in the 30-minute group training classes that are taking the fitness world by storm”, says the Council.
