The Christchurch City Council sets Long Term Plans (LTP) to set out a 10-year budget that includes community facilities (like pools, skateparks and libraries), transport, water management, parks, rates and heaps more! We want to know what you like, what else needs to be in there and what could be flagged!

The Christchurch Youth Council are a voice for the youth of Christchurch, wanting Christchurch to be the best city it can be, and for youth to be involved in making that happen.

Final reminder: submissions on the ECan Long Term Plan (including the proposal to disestablish the 107 and 108 bus routes in the Papanui area) closes at 5pm on Monday 26 March 2018. Think Papanui has made a submission that includes comments made in response to the previous post on this topic, but your words will carry more weight if you give your own feedback directly. You can do this through the web-based ECan submission portal (follow the link below), but a more user-friendly way is to send submissions by email (to mailroom@ecan.govt.nz) – please ensure you use ‘LTP SUBMISSION’ as your email subject and that your name and address is included. You can also request the opportunity to talk to Councillors about your submission. Chlorination of Christchurch’s drinking water supply will start from 26 March 2018, starting with Brooklands and Kainga, as well as the Heathcote Valley. Progressively over the following few weeks the rest of the city’s supply will be treated, so we should expect water to have been treated any time from 26 March onwards. The Council is temporarily treating Christchurch’s drinking water with chlorine while it upgrades the below ground well heads. Temporary chlorination will start from 26 March 2018 and provides an extra level of protection against waterborne illnesses.

In the draft Long Term Plan, funding for the Tuckers to Sturrocks Road section of the Northern Line cycleway is deferred by two years – it is now planned to be constructed in 2021 rather than 2019. This section (pictured in this 2016 photo) has a well-worn ‘desire line’ which indicates that many people already use it, despite safety issues. A delay in providing safer access for cyclists and pedestrians may not be just about deferring Council spending – as reported in 2017, negotiations between the Council and KiwiRail over the use of the rail corridor had almost reached a stalemate over “exorbitant” rental costings.

At the 9 March meeting, the Papanui-Innes Community Board: approved no stopping proposals for Harewood Road, McFaddens Road, and Perry Street; approved a grant from the Board’s Positive Youth Development Fund; and agreed to request speaking rights to object to the removal of the 107 and 108 bus routes in the Papanui Ward.
