Community engagement in the Papanui Ward in Christchurch, New Zealand
Repair and widening works are expected soon on the Northern Line Cycleway between Langdons Road and Sawyers Arms Road. The work is planned to commence on Monday 25 September and run through to late October 2023, weather permitting. The shared path will be closed during the work, with a detour in place via Sisson Drive. See the start work notice (above and below) for more information.
The Great Library Plant and Seed Swap will take place next week at a number of Christchurch City Libraries, including Papanui and Redwood. Come along to your local library and bring any seeds or seedlings you’d like to swap. Don’t have anything to swap but would like something to take away and grow? That’s okay too. The Waipapa Papanui-Innes-Central Community Board will meet this Thursday at 4pm in the Papanui Boardroom.
The agenda includes: a new lease for the Marist Harewood Cricket Club at Redwood Park for the club’s pavilion; forty Summer with your Neighbours grants totalling $4,500; an application to the Board’s Discretionary Response Fund by the City Park Community Patrol; and an area report on initiatives and issues within the Board area.
The meeting is open for the public to attend and will be livestreamed on the Board’s YouTube channel and Facebook page.
The Nor’West Arc cycleway will (eventually) link Papanui through to Canterbury University and beyond. Work will start next week on the section from the University to Aorangi Road – see the Council’s Newsline story for information on traffic impacts including detour routes. Progress on the section of Aorangi Road between Ilam Road and Brookside Terrace will be delayed following a Council decision yesterday to consider a design change. The Papanui end of the project requires additional funding to be found through the Long Term Plan process and will not be built this financial year.
Papanui Pet Service: St Paul’s Anglican Church, Papanui will hold a Pet’s Service this Sunday 10 September – people are invited to bring their live animals as well as pictures of past pets, animal toys etc to participate and receive a blessing. Signs of progress: construction has begun on the missing sections of the Northern Line cycleway. This photo looks north from Barnes Road and shows the future path to Main North Road at the Belfast bridge. Work between Tuckers and Sturrocks Roads is also getting underway. These sections are planned to be completed by mid 2024.

Two new bus routes will begin operating in Christchurch from Monday 4 September. At that time the current routes 17 and 28 will cease operation and be replaced by new routes 8 and 27. In the Papanui area, the number 27 will follow the same route as the old number 28, but at a higher frequency (20 minutes on weekdays until 6pm), and south of the bus exchange the service will head to Huntsbury rather than the number 28’s destination of Lyttelton.
