Sending Love NZ seeks donations of new or pre-loved Christmas cards

Having a post-Christmas tidy-up? Sending Love NZ is an initiative to deliver Christmas cards to people who may experience loneliness over Christmas. In Christchurch more than 3,000 cards were delivered in the lead-up to Christmas, including to a number of rest homes in the Papanui area, but there weren't enough cards to get around them all. If you would to donate Christmas cards for 2019 (either new or pre-loved able to be recycled into new cards), please follow these links for contact details:

Prestons Rd eastbound closure & Grimseys/QEII reopening

Prestons Rd eastbound closure & Grimseys/QEII reopening:
From Monday 14 January to 29 January Prestons Road will be closed to eastbound traffic, just east of Grimseys Road. (The westbound traffic lane stays available.) A diversion for eastbound traffic will be in place, via QEII Drive.
From Wednesday 30 January traffic management will change to allow for two-way Prestons Road traffic on one lane by using traffic lights. This set up will be in place for 18 months.
The Grimseys Road intersection with QEII Drive will be opened (left out only) from Friday 11 January until mid February. It will then briefly close again to allow finishing pavement work to take place, before reopening permanently in its final configuration of left in and left out only.

Papanui community volunteer recognised in New Year’s Honours

Congratulations Elsie Walkinshaw QSM – see this post from Papanui Baptist Freedom Trust for details:

“Congratulations Elsie Walkinshaw – awarded a QSM in the New Year’s Honours! Elsie is one of our Papanui Baptist Freedom Trust volunteers and certainly deserves this recognition!

From the Dept. of the Prime Minister & Cabinet:
“Ms Elsie Walkinshaw has supported disadvantaged people in Christchurch through a variety of roles since 1990. Ms Walkinshaw delivered food parcels for Methodist Mission in the 1990s and was later employed as a budget advisor until 2006. She volunteered at Christchurch Women’s Refuge from 1991 to 1993 before working full-time in a safe house with women who had escaped domestic violence until 1998. In 2006 she collaborated on the establishment of Turning Points Trust to provide budget advice and advocacy services for people in financial difficulty in Christchurch East. For the first year while the Trust was being established she worked 35 hours a week on a voluntary basis. She helped administer the Trust until 2009. She was employed as a budget advisor and advocate with Super Grans. In the aftermath of the 2010 and 2011 Christchurch earthquakes she provided assistance to quake-affected families by coordinating access to food and other necessities through Grace Vineyard Church. From 2012 until her retirement in 2016 she was employed in advocacy and community assistance with Compassion Trust, where she created and delivered a number of extended courses on finance management. Since 2016 Ms Walkinshaw has been a volunteer telephone counsellor with Lifeline and a volunteer advocate and debt management advisor with Freedom Trust.”

CNC project to impact local roads in January 2019

As construction on the Christchurch Northern Corridor project continues, watch out for changes in January 2019 at the Philpotts Rd and Grimseys Rd intersections with QEII Drive, a partial closure of Prestons Rd, and a route change for the Orbiter bus. Think Papanui will post more about these in the coming weeks. In meantime you can click through to the project website for details:
