Works to build the missing sections of the Northern Line cycleway between Papanui and Northwood have been delayed once again, and the timing remains uncertain for safer crossings for pedestrians and cyclists at Harewood, Langdons, and Sawyers Arms roads.
Council staff have today advised that works at Tuckers, Sturrocks, and Barnes Roads was due to commence on 6 June but KiwiRail has cancelled their approval. Work along the corridor between Tuckers Rd to Sturrocks Rd and Barnes Rd to Main North Rd might now commence in July or August 2023, but this is not yet confirmed. There is no indication of timing for work on crossings at Tuckers, Sturrocks, and Barnes Roads.
Crossing upgrades at Harewood, Langdons, and Sawyers Arms Roads remains provisionally booked with KiwiRail to commence in November 2023 but Council staff advise of “a number of factors” around this timing including confirming KiwiRail costings and design approval.

Have you seen this chapel on Windermere Road? It’s one of the last remnants of Loreto College, a Sisters of Mercy boarding school for primary-aged boys which opened in 1930. There’s now a community organisation on the site, and the chapel remains in use as a youth and community space while awaiting funding for repairs and improvements. Today the chapel carries the name Hine Atawhai, acknowledging and preserving the link to the Sisters of Mercy.
