Community engagement in the Papanui Ward in Christchurch, New Zealand
Two health-related building projects are underway on the former Firestone site on Langdons Road. The Cancer Society Canterbury-West Coast will have patient accommodation and support services in one, and the Braintree Wellness Centre will support Cantabrians living with a neurological condition.
Update 12:40PM: the truck is gone and the road is fully open.
The right turn / U-turn for northbound traffic under the Main North Road bridges between Redwood & Belfast is currently blocked. The truck involved has a full load of concrete and it is unclear how long it will take to extricate it. Thanks to the alert member of the public who notified Think Papanui of this incident.
The Waipapa/Papanui-Innes Community Board will meet this Friday 4 June at 9am in the Papanui boardroom. The agenda includes applications to the Board’s Discretionary Response Fund from: Papanui Toy Library; Papanui Leagues Club; St Albans Residents Association; and Northcote School. There was a clean-up day planned for Papanui Bush this Friday 4 June 2021, but this has been postposed. The bush plantings are around the margins of a stormwater retention area, and as you can see it is currently holding a large amount of water. Photo credit: Parks Team, Christchurch City Council.
There are currently some issues with the waste water system in St Heliers Crescent in Aranui, and on the following streets in Shirley: Warden Street; Cargill Place; North Parade; Hope Street; Hercules Street.
The Council currently has sucker trucks out in Shirley to help with the situation, but for the next 24 hours residents in the area are asked to avoid doing washing, and to flush toilets only when absolutely necessary.

If your normal kerbside collection day is Monday, the Christchurch City Council is asking that you delay putting your bins out until first thing in the morning due to potential high winds overnight.
Important update about Monday’s kerbside collection.
We’re advising people who have a kerbside collection scheduled for Monday, to put their bins out tomorrow morning before 6am, rather than overnight, if possible.
This is due to weather conditions and to avoid bins blowing over with potential high winds overnight.
If your street is closed due to flooding and you have a kerbside collection scheduled for Monday, please do not put your bins out until your street has re-opened. Our Resource Recovery (Kerbside Collection) staff will organise for your bins to be collected.

– Heavy rain is continuing to fall this morning, and is expected to continue into Monday. The Press has reported a power outage in Bishopdale/Casebrook, and also overnight flooding on Main North Road in Belfast – it’s unclear if these issues are now resolved.
– Metservice reports that 26mm of rain fell in Christchurch yesterday, and close to another 30mm so far today (since midnight), with a total of over 50mm expected today.
– At the time of writing, some Christchurch roads have been closed due to flooding – link below. If you need to be on the roads this weekend, please drive slowly, particularly through any surface flooding, so that you don’t push water onto people’s properties. Also, try and avoid walking or biking through surface flooding as there is a chance it could be contaminated with wastewater.
– In the wider Canterbury region, Environment Canterbury has issued a flood advisory for the Ashburton & Hinds catchments, and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency – South Island advises that SH 73 between Springfield & Castle Hill is closed due to slips & flooding.

This Saturday 29 May from 10am there’ll be a community planting day at the Cranford Basin Kahikatea Forest. Conservation Volunteers New Zealand are working with the Christchurch City Council to plant a total of 40,000 kahikatea trees in the wetland area that will provide stormwater retention services as well as enhancing urban biodiversity.
