“This intersection needs lights” was an issue that Harewood Ward Councillor Aaron Keown campaigned on during the 2016 local body elections. The Christchurch City Council is now consulting on two options for improving the safety at the intersection of Breens, Gardiners and Harewood Roads. One option involves closing the median on Harewood Rd and making both Gardiners and Breens Roads left turn in and left turn out only (lower cost & likely to be part-funded by the Government, could be implemented in the next 12 months). The other option is the installation of traffic lights (higher cost & unlikely to attract a Government subsidy, and in fact no funding in the 2018-2028 Long Term Plan for this option). Other than cost, there are factors to consider such as the future ‘Wings to Wheels’ cycleway, changes to traffic patterns on local roads, and priority vs other intersections in the city.
