Grimseys Rd subway closure, take two: the Grimseys Rd pedestrian/cycle subway will be closed tonight Sunday 2 August from 10pm until 4am for asphalting work. This had been planned for a couple of weeks ago but was rescheduled due to weather.

The Council’s guide to reducing waste has landed in Think Papanui’s letterbox. There’s information on what can go in the green, yellow, and red bins – if there is too much contamination in green & yellow bins, whole truckloads can be rejected and sent to landfill instead of being composted/recycled.

In 2019 the Waipapa/Papanui-Innes Community Board distributed $4,000 in ‘Summer with your neighbours’ funding to support over forty local events. Summer with your neighbours is back for 2020, and applications are now open until 6 September. This initiative started out as Neighbourhood Week by the then Shirley-Papanui Community Board in 1998 and has grown to be city-wide and extended through the whole summer. This Friday afternoon 31 July the QEII Drive shared use path will be reopened to pedestrians and cyclists. This path has been detoured for longer than originally expected due to the COVID-19 shutdown.

There’s a good news story on the front page of this week’s Nor’West News – local retailer Papanui Cycles says there was a bike buying boom post-lockdown, and trading now is at normal winter levels. The Winters Road cycle & pedestrian subway will be closed tonight Sunday 26 July for asphalting work, from 10pm until 4am. Please use an alternate route between these hours. (Update on the nearby Grimseys subway – the asphalting work there was delayed due to the weather & is expected to happen next weekend.)
