Environment Canterbury councillors uncomfortable with 10.5 per cent rates rise

Further to yesterday’s story about a likely average City Council rates rise of around 5% (down slightly on forecast), last week Environment Canterbury approved a budget that will see their rates rise an average of 10.51%, which is double what was forecast in the regional council’s Long-Term Plan. In percentage terms that’s a big jump – in dollar terms it could mean an extra $33.37 a year for the average Christchurch household. Click through for more information:

Recap: the week ended 21 June

Think Papanui’s curator Simon Britten rounds up stories from the past week:

Last Friday night there was a serious house fire in Papanui, near the corner of Main North Rd and Cranford St. Thank you to the community member who shared a video of the event with Think Papanui. I subsequently also posted a link to a Givealittle page to support the people affected. At the time of writing this recap the $1,000 fundraising target had just been exceeded.

Over the weekend Think Papanui launched a ‘Papanui in pictures’ photo promotion. Members of the public have the opportunity to share a photo from the Papanui area, and one lucky contributor will be chosen at random to receive a Mitre 10 gift voucher. Click through for details, and note that this is open to all ages and no Facebook or other social media account is needed. Thank you to Mitre 10 Mega Papanui for donating the gift voucher and covering some promotional costs. By Thursday the first submissions were arriving.

Morrison Avenue is currently restricted to one lane due to road works. Take care if you are in the area.

The Waipapa/Papanui-Innes Community Board’s June newsletter is now available.

The Nor’West News this week included an update on submissions on the Council’s proposals for the Harewood/Gardiners/Breens intersection.

If you read this recap by Saturday afternoon you may be in time to catch Papanui High School’s ‘Beauty and the Beast Jr’ production.

The Council is consulting on a draft Integrated Water Strategythere’s a lot of detail in this, so I’m going to see if I can pick up a printed copy of the consultation document at one of our local libraries, and I’ll plan to attend a drop-in session.

There are a couple of candidate information sessions coming up for people interested in standing as a Council or Community Board candidate in the upcoming local body elections. The first is this coming Tuesday 25 June.

I’m a customer of the vege co-op that operates out of Northgate Trust / Northcity Church on Sawyers Arms Road. Contact the trust if you’re interested in a weekly or fortnightly $15 bag of fruit and vegetables.

I’ve published a recap of last week’s Council meeting that considered the plan to manage traffic downstream of the Christchurch Northern Corridor. It’s a longer-form piece that I’ve published separately to Think Papanui – you’ll find it here.

Coming up:

  • Next week there’s the first Council candidate information session (see above).
  • There’ll be a meeting next Tuesday to finalise what is being described as a ‘no surprises’ Council budget for 2019/20. The agenda for the meeting is available online.
  • Next Friday 28 June is the date for the next meeting of the Waipapa/Papanui-Innes Community Board. I’ll share some information about the agenda once it’s published.

Special thanks to Cyclone Computers, who this week donated a Lenovo Laptop/Tablet to support Think Papanui’s online work to keep the community connected.

Feedback is always welcome on Think Papanui’s content, either on Facebook or Instagram, or directly to me.
With warm regards
Simon Britten
