Think Papanui ‘2,000 likes’ promotion

Simon Britten, curator of Think Papanui here: I promised a promotion when this Facebook page hit 2,000 likes, and we’re just about there, so to acknowledge the number of people who have engaged with Think Papanui recently (on topics including Kmart’s move from Shirley to Papanui) I have two $50 Kmart gift vouchers to give away. I’ll draw one name from those who like this post on Facebook, and one from those who like a separate video that you can also find on the Think Papanui page. To be in the running, you just need to like the page and like the posts. (You’re welcome to share and let others know, but that’s not necessary to enter. You can like both posts to double your chances, but they won’t both go to the same person.) I’ll draw the names after 5pm next Sunday the 12th of May, and all other terms and conditions can be found at https://thinkpapanui.nz/tnc.

Video: Think Papanui – thanks for subscribing!

“Kia ora, this is Simon Britten from Think Papanui.

I’m down at the Northlink retail site on Langdons Road, which is where Kmart have announced they’ll be relocating to, from The Palms in Shirley.

I’ve had a lot of response to my Facebook post about this move, with more than 6,000 comments. With that many comments I haven’t been able to keep across the detail, but what I have noticed is that I’ve heard from people who are happy that Kmart is coming here, in fact they’re coming … just in the background – sorry about the lighting. They’re just going to be over there somewhere, which is still a bit of a construction site. Some people of course who are not happy, particularly with the Shirley store closing, and there’s other people who have raised a range of concerns about the move.

Thanks for very much for engaging and connecting with Think Papanui.

Now, I promised a promotion when Think Papanui hit 2,000 likes, and we’re just about there now, so I’ve got two $50 Kmart gift vouchers to give away, which I thought was appropriate under the circumstances.

I’m just going to read the details of that so I get it right – excuse me for looking off-camera. I’m going to draw one name from people who like this video, and I’m going to draw another name from people who like a separate post with a photo that I’m going to put up after this. To be in the running, you just need to like this page and like the posts. You can like them both – get in the running twice, that’s fine – you won’t win twice, as if I draw the same name I’ll just redraw because I want to spread the love. You’re welcome to share and let others know, but won’t be necessary to be in the draw. I’m going to draw the names after 5pm next Sunday [not Thursday] the 12th of May. All other terms and conditions can be found on thinkpapanui.nz.

I’m just going to spin round one more time to have a look at the building site here on Langdons Road. Across the car park there’s going to be some more construction – in theory, early in 2020 that’s where we’re going to see Kmart, over that way. The gift vouchers are good for four years, so if there’s a delay with construction you’ll still be fine, or of course you can go to The Palms or anywhere else to spend them in the meantime.

So have a great day, and thanks for connecting with Think Papanui.”

Kmart Papanui store confirmed

After repeatedly denying plans to open a Papanui store, Kmart has now confirmed that it will be relocating its Shirley store to Langdons Road in Papanui in early 2020. “The decision to relocate the store to Papanui is part of our vision to continue to grow our store network in Christchurch, and we are doing this by ensuring our stores are in the best locations to service our customers now and well into the future … We look forward to welcoming everybody into our new store in early 2020.” The full Kmart press release can be found at http://www.medianet.com.au/releases/release-details.aspx/…

Recap: the week ended 26 April

Think Papanui’s curator Simon Britten rounds up stories covered over the past week:

Over this week I’ve seen a lot of backed up traffic on Main North Road southbound through Redwood, due to a lane closure at Prestons Road. These works are due to be completed before next Monday (but there’ll be some more works in the area during the July school holidays).

Last week I mentioned the contentious cost of a picnic table for the Shirley Community site, and there’s been a follow-up in the Nor’West News. I’ve also seen a few elected members and others in the community taking to Facebook to voice various views on the issue.

We’ve had good news for our environment and for the Cranford Basin area in particular, with up to 40,000 kahikatea trees to be planted there in an initiative funded by central Government. This was Think Papanui’s top post of the week. The Cranford Basin will also partially be developed for housing in the next few years, while a large area will continue to be used for stormwater management.

Starting this Saturday 27 April there’ll be a 6-day series of ‘sustainable living‘ events taking place at Papanui Library.

If your wheelie bins are normally collected on a Thursday or Friday you may have noticed by now that there’s been a change due to the ANZAC Day public holiday. Thursday’s collection moved to Friday, and Friday’s to Saturday.

On Think Papanui I have published a reminder that this is a local body election year, and shared City Council information on timing, enrolment, and more.

Closing today: nominations for Community Service Awards close at 5pm today. This is an opportunity to recognise individuals for significant voluntary community service.

Feedback is always welcome on Think Papanui’s content, either on Facebook or Instagram, or directly to me.
With warm regards
Simon Britten

Local body Elections coming up later this year

Local body elections are coming up later this year. All enrolled voters can cast a vote for their preferred Mayoral candidate, while Councillors and Community Board members will be elected by voters from the wards they represent. The current Councillor and Community Board members in Papanui Ward have confirmed they will be standing again, as will Think Papanui’s Simon Britten. Click through for more details:

Election year is chance to build the Christchurch you want

With local body elections only six months away, people in Christchurch and Banks Peninsula are being encouraged to consider becoming a candidate and to make sure they are registered to vote.”
