Chapel Street is now closed at Langdons Road, and Langdons is restricted to one-way traffic travelling West towards Greers Road, as work ramps up on wastewater renewals and cycleway construction in Papanui.
Langdons Road is expected to reopen to two-way traffic in Mid June, while closures on Chapel Street will continue until later in the year.
On May 5, the Government announced the Head Start Pathway, giving councils until early August to submit proposals for local government amalgamation within their region, a process described in The Press today as forcing a fast-tracked amalgamation of local government.
Christchurch City Council is asking for feedback from the community on priorities, concerns, and the outcomes expected from any potential changes. An ‘early engagement’ survey is open for feedback until Sunday 21 June.
Traffic management is now set up on Harewood Road as two infrastructure projects get underway – water supply pipe replacement between Greers Rd and Sails St, and cycleway & wastewater upgrades between Harris Crescent and the railway line.

Christchurch City Council is seeking feedback on residents’ experiences of getting around in Christchurch. This survey is your chance to share what’s working, what’s not, and what you’d like to see improved as the Council plans for the future of transport in Christchurch.
Whether you drive, use public transport, walk, bike, or mix it up, we’d like to hear your thoughts.
Note that this survey is separate to ECan’s current Public Transport Network Review, which is also open for feedback (see earlier post).
Christchurch City Council has published an update on work on the new wastewater storage facility in the Cranford Basin.
Truck movements along Grassmere Street have been paused, and contractors are reducing the height of manholes along the street. Along with replacement of some pavers and resurfacing of a section of the road, this work is intended to reduce vibration from future truck movements. A revised traffic management plan limits trucks to 30km/h, and restricts heavy vehicles from crossing the Papanui Parallel cycleway between 8:30am-9am and 3pm-3:30pm.
The Council advises that an alternative access route for trucks is unlikely in the short term, citing the need to purchase land, develop designs, and get resource consent from ECan.
From Monday 18 May for around six weeks, contractors will be working to implement permanent peak-hour bus lanes on Cranford Street between Innes Road and Berwick Street. This includes updates of the existing road marking & signage, and installation of bus lane cameras, along with safety improvements at the Cranford Street / Westminster Street intersection and the English Park signalised crossing.
