In the draft Long Term Plan, funding for the Tuckers to Sturrocks Road section of the Northern Line cycleway is deferred by two years – it is now planned to be constructed in 2021 rather than 2019. This section (pictured in this 2016 photo) has a well-worn ‘desire line’ which indicates that many people already use it, despite safety issues. A delay in providing safer access for cyclists and pedestrians may not be just about deferring Council spending – as reported in 2017, negotiations between the Council and KiwiRail over the use of the rail corridor had almost reached a stalemate over “exorbitant” rental costings.
