Sat 30 April: St Albans Skate Park Opening

Next Saturday 30 April from 12pm there’ll be a Skate Jam to celebrate the completion of the St Albans Skate Park redevelopment. Cheapskates Skate Skool will be hosting the Skate Jam with free skate hire, instruction and competitions.

The section of Wheels to Wings cycleway being cons The section of Wheels to Wings cycleway being constructed on Harewood Road between the railway line and Matsons Avenue is taking shape. This will provide a link between the Nor'West Arc and Northern Line cycleways. Other work underway on Harewood Road is for wastewater and water supply upgrades, and all of these works are scheduled to be complete in December 2026. On 10 August 2026, the Waipapa Papanui-Innes-Centr On 10 August 2026, the Waipapa Papanui-Innes-Central Community Board: received public forum presentations and deputations, including a proposal for a bike skills and pump track and toilets for Rutland Reserve (pic); approved parking restrictions for a development off Banks Avenue; approved P3 parking outside Casebrook Intermediate School; recommended Council approval of new lighting poles in Hagley Park North; approved the MacFarlane Park urban forest tree planting plan; recommended Council approval of reclassification and disposal of land associated with development in Leander Street; approved over half a million dollars in Strengthening Communities funding grants across 37 recipient organisations; allocated $27,000 in funding to Community Board projects; approved a grant application from Purapura Whetu Trust to support the Phillipstown Community Garden; and received an Area Report on issues and initiatives within the Community Board area. From 24 August, a two-year construction project to From 24 August, a two-year construction project to upgrade wastewater pipes along Wairakei Road gets underway. The first stage of works will be between Ilam Road and 165 Wairakei Road (near Aorangi Road), with the road reduced to a single lane citybound. Detours will be in place for traffic heading away from the city, including for the number 8 (Port to Port) bus route. If you're in the area, take care for detours and changed traffic conditions. Christchurch City Council has proposed to keep its Christchurch City Council has proposed to keep its boundaries as they are and become a unitary authority under the Government’s Head Start Pathway reform process. As part of the reform, regional councillors will not be re-elected as of 2028, and as a unitary authority the council would absorb Environment Canterbury’s functions. If the Government accepts the proposal in principle, it would move into a detailed design phase. Detailed design includes a wide range of considerations, including: financial impacts, including rates, debt and transition costs; and representation, wards and the role of community or local boards. Under the Government’s current timetable, this phase is expected to run from October 2026 to March 2027. Cabinet would then consider the detailed proposal and make final decisions in 2027. The agenda includes: public participation; roading approvals for a development fronting Banks Avenue; P3 parking outside Casebrook Intermediate School (pic); sports field lights in Hagley Park North; a tree planting plan for MacFarlane Park; reserve revocation and land disposal associated with development on Leander Street; a recommendation of $494,913 in Strengthening Communities Funding grants to 37 recipient organisations, but with no multi-year funding available; allocation of $27,000 in funding to Community Board projects; a grant application from Purapura Whetu Trust to support the Phillipstown Community Garden; and an Area Report on issues and initiatives within the Community Board area. The Christchurch City Council is calling for expre The Christchurch City Council is calling for expressions of interest from 15 to 24-year olds who are keen to lead a climate project in Christchurch through the Youth Climate Action Fund. A wide range of ideas could qualify for support, with between $1,600 and $8,500 available for successful applications. Expressions of interest are open until 31 August 2026, and applications will open between 14 August and 28 September 2026. A public survey is open until Sunday 26 July 2026, A public survey is open until Sunday 26 July 2026, for feedback on options for the reorganisation of Canterbury councils. This follows the Government's request for proposals for local government amalgamation. Christchurch City Council will meet on 4 August to consider what approach to take regarding a proposal, which must be submitted to Government by 9 August. Possible options range from a unitary authority on Christchurch's existing boundaries, through to an 'all of Canterbury' single authority. Matsons Avenue will be one-way between Condell Ave Matsons Avenue will be one-way between Condell Ave and Harewood Road (with traffic flowing towards Harewood Road), until December 2026. This will provide a safe working environment for contractors upgrading the stormwater and wastewater infrastructure on Matsons Avenue and constructing the Nor'West Arc Cycleway. Harewood Road remains open to two-way traffic, but a speed reduction is in place. Windermere Road is also due to be closed at its intersection with Matsons Ave, although when Think Papanui was on site this morning that closure wasn't yet in place.
