At the inaugural meeting on Thursday 6 November, the Waipapa Papanui-Innes-Central Community Board elected Sunita Gautam as Chairperson for the first half the 2025-2028 term, and Simon Britten as Chairperson for the second half of the term. Simon will serve as Deputy Chairperson for the first half of the term and Sunita for the second. The Board also received a report explaining statutory requirements, and scheduled its first ordinary meeting of the term for 4pm on Thursday 11 December in the Papanui boardroom. Roadworks will be underway on Harewood Road from M

Roadworks will be underway on Harewood Road from Monday 17 November, with the installation of traffic signals the at Harewood/Gardiners/Breens intersection and outside Harewood School, along with watermain & stormwater upgrades, and safety improvements.
From Monday 17 November the following traffic management is planned:
⛔A road closure on Gardiners Road between Goya Place and Harewood Road. There will be no access to Harewood Road via Gardiners Road.
🚧A lane-drop on Harewood Road in each direction between Crofton Road and Leacroft Street. Two-way traffic will be maintained.
⛔No entry to Harewood Road from Johns Road/State Highway 1.
➡A one-way system on Harewood Road between Watsons Road and Russley Road/State Highway 1.
🎄Contractors will break for the Christmas period on Friday 19 December and traffic management will be reduced on site during this time.
👷‍♂️Super week
The second stage of work will begin with a super week, 7 days of 24-hour work, from the evening of Sunday 4 January to the evening of Sunday 11 January 2026. The super week will see the full closure of the Harewood/Gardiners/Breens intersection, and will significantly reduce the duration of the work. There will also be work at the intersection of Harewood Road and Waimakariri Road near Harewood School, and along Whitchurch Place.
The final stage of work will continue from Monday 12 January with minor traffic management in place and will focus on finishing work such as line marking and traffic light commissioning. This work will take about a month to complete.

Kmart's annual Wishing Tree appeal has been launch

Kmart's annual Wishing Tree appeal has been launched at Kmart Papanui. For over 31 years, The Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal has helped assist families and people in need in our communities at Christmas and beyond. You can support by leaving a gift or donating in store, or contributing online (see link in bio). Contributions are passed to families in need via Kmart's charity partner The Salvation Army. Gifts do not need to be purchased at Kmart, and Kmart kindly asks that you do not wrap them. The Appeal is unable to accept used or second-hand gifts.

The final declaration of results in the local elec

The final declaration of results in the local election are consistent with the progress results published on 11 October. Victoria Henstock returns as Councillor for Papanui; while two-term deputy chair (and Think Papanui curator) Simon Britten is returned to the Community Board, joined by newcomer Ashleigh Feary.
The Council's inaugural meeting will take place on Thursday 30 October, and the Community Board's will be on Thursday 6 November at 4pm in the Papanui boardroom.
With Environment Canterbury (ECan), Papanui has become part of the Christchurch Central/Ōhoko Constituency. ECan Councillors elected in Central are Genevieve Robinson and Nettles Lamont, who will be sworn in at ECan's first meeting on Wednesday 29 October.

The Papanui RSA has announced it will close, with a final operating date of Saturday 8 November 2025. Beyond that date the future for the organisation is unclear - that will be a consideration for the RSA's executive once the wind-up of the current site is complete. Think Papanui understands there is intent to still host an Anzac Day parade in Papanui in 2026 - stay tuned for news closer to the time.

People moving through Papanui were caught up in a

People moving through Papanui were caught up in a KiwiRail signal fault on Tuesday afternoon this week, with barrier arms, lights, and bells activated for an extended period of time at multiple crossings in the area. KiwiRail has advised Think Papanui that the cause was an overloaded circuit - "Failures in train detection can trigger safety devices at multiple level crossings in the same section, even though no train is approaching", said Chief Infrastructure Officer Siva Sivapakkiam. "A Signals Technician manually turned off the activations, with Police assisting by directing traffic. The issue was investigated and the fault resolved by 8pm.
"KiwiRail reminds the public that trains can appear at any time whether they are expected or not. Trains always have right of way and travel faster than they appear to. Safety is paramount and we strongly encourage road users to follow the signage at level crossings."
