From the New Zealand History website: "In August 1946 Christchurch City Council formally approved a proposal by the Papanui RSA and the Papanui Beautifying Association to plant trees in memory of fallen soldiers in selected streets of that suburb.
The streets chosen for the purpose were Alpha Avenue, Claremont Avenue, Condell Avenue, Dormer Street, Gambia Street, Halton Street, Hartley Avenue, Kenwyn Avenue, Lansbury Avenue, Norfolk Street, Perry Street, Scotson Avenue, St James Avenue, Tomes Road and Windermere Road. It seems likely that memorial trees were also planted in Tillman Avenue and St John’s Street (now Blair Avenue), although these have not always been recognized as memorial avenues."

Have you seen this chapel on Windermere Road? It's one of the last remnants of Loreto College, a Sisters of Mercy boarding school for primary-aged boys which opened in 1930. There's now a community organisation on the site, and the chapel remains in use as a youth and community space while awaiting funding for repairs and improvements. Today the chapel carries the name Hine Atawhai, acknowledging and preserving the link to the Sisters of Mercy.

On Thursday 11 May, the Waipapa Papanui-Innes-Cent

On Thursday 11 May, the Waipapa Papanui-Innes-Central Community Board: received six public forum presentations and one deputation; received correspondence on vehicle speeds on Rutland Street; approved Greening the East tree plantings and associated parking changes for Worcester, Cashel, and Hereford streets; recommended the Council approves an outdoor dining licence for C1 Cafe; approved stopping and parking restrictions outside Christchurch Adventist School; laid a funding application to support the Edmonds Factory Garden Party on the table pending further information, and approved an application from the St Albans Residents Association; adopted the Board's plan for 2023-25; received an Area Report on issues and initiatives current within the Board area; and exchanged information on matters of interest. Breaking news: today the Christchurch City Council

Breaking news: today the Christchurch City Council has approved the detailed design of incomplete sections of the Northern Line major cycleway route. Staff have advised that construction of missing sections north of Northcote Road can start next month, and crossing upgrades at Harewood, Langdons, and Sawyers Arms Roads in late 2023. The Waipapa/Papanui-Innes-Central Community Board will meet at 4pm on Thursday 11 May at the Phillipstown Community Hub. The agenda includes: public participation; Greening the East tree plantings on Worcester, Cashel, and Hereford Streets; an outdoor dining licence for C1 cafe; parking changes for Christchurch Adventist School (pic); two applications to the Board's Discretionary Response Fund; a recommendation to adopt the Board's Plan for 2023-25; and an Area Report on initiatives and issues current within the Board area.
